2006 Peacekeeping & Peacebuilding Policy Forums

 

February 2006

  • On February 1st, the PEP convened representatives from NGOs, the US government and the private sector for a “big tent” meeting. The intent of the meeting was to share information and identify common ground for pursuing advocacy and/or educational action around both UN peace operations and USG capabilities and activities. In addition to the PEP itself, organizations that were present included the Alliance for International Peacebuilding, InterAction’s Transition, Conflict, and Peace Working, the Ploughshare Fund’s Peace and Security Initiative, and the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service.

April 2006

  • On April 12th, the PEP convened a policy forum. Topics discussed included US Funding for UN Peacekeeping, an Update on MONUC, UN Reform, Darfur Peacekeeping, Funding for S/CRS and the Conflict Response Fund and other US government stabilization and reconstruction initiatives, and an Update on Standing UN Police Capacity.

June 2006

  • On June 21st, the PEP convened a policy forum. The meeting featured a briefing from representatives of S/CRS. Participants were briefed on and discussed the current status of UN reform and the UN budget standoff. The state of US funding for UN peacekeeping was also discussed.

November 2006

  • On November 9th, the PEP convened a policy forum. The meeting featured discussion of the following topics: 1] Post-Election Analysis - Implications for PEP Advocacy Issues; 2] UN Peacekeeping Funding Situation, including a) FY2007 Funding Bills b) Carryover Arrears and Estimated FY2007 Arrears c) FY08 Budget Request; 3] Overview of advocacy options and strategies regarding Darfur peacekeeping; 4] U.S. Government Peacebuilding and Peacekeeping Capabilities and Funding, including a) Funding for S/CRS, Conflict Response Fund, Active Response Corps, Civilian Response Reserve; b) Authorization for S/CRS, Conflict Response Fund, Active Response Corps, Civilian Response Reserve; c) Funding for Global Peace Operations Initiative and/or related activities; d) Funding/Support for Regional Peacekeeping; and e) Defense Department initiatives.
